The Intellectual Property Awareness Summit begins today. This virtual gathering of international IP owners, educators, lawyers, students, organizations and investors aims to explore ways to make IP rights as well as the benefits to audiences. We are pleased McCoy Russell Attorney, Justin Wagner, is among them. McCoy Russell aims to be at the forefront of thought leadership and to get more folks involved in intellectual property.
While McCoy Russell LLP’s offices remained closed to the public and continues to operate as a tele-working office, we are happy to be building out our new headquarters in the heart of the Pearl in the former American Chicle Building. Specifically, the firm is working with DIRTT and their building technology to minimize the impact of our Office build-out while allowing us to reuse or repurpose our office furniture in the future.
We want to make the most of our office space, and its natural lighting, to create a collaborative space that enables a collaborative space for in-person interaction, while maintaining flexibility for employees to work from home and reduce commuting. Our paperless office is within walking distance of various transit options, a plethora of unique eateries and boutique businesses, and even grocery stores with locally scoured food and supplies. This enables our staff to walk to get whatever they may need, further reducing our environmental impact.
McCoy Russell has a strong practice in the Green Technology space, including helping our clients protect innovations in areas such as reducing vehicle emissions, improving batteries to enable electrification, improving energy storage in the grid, reducing volatile organic compounds in footwear and apparel, and many more. We want to carry the theme of reducing the environmental impact through to our work. We want to utilize our expertise to not only help our clients develop a strategic IP portfolio, but advance businesses that will make an impact on our environment – we do live in Oregon after all!
Congratulations to McCoy Russell client, Centrix Inc. on a recent ruling regarding their free-spin temporary fasteners. According to a ruling handed down on March 25th by His Honour Judge Hacon in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, the Centrix fasteners do not infringe Kwikbolt Ltd.’s patent in the United Kingdom.
In the case of Kwikbolt Ltd v Airbus Operations Ltd., Kwikbolt had sued Airbus Operations Limited, a large user of Centrix temporary fasteners, alleging infringement of their patent. The judge ruled against Kwikbolt and held that Centrix’s temporary fasteners patented design did not infringe.
Centrix provides not just industry-leading high-quality innovative products but is also dedicated to support its customers worldwide, as this case has shown.

This webinar will discuss what’s next for startups after receiving funding, patent limitations in software technology, and tax exemptions for small business.
John will share his unique insight into myths of software patenting to help participants make sense of somethings they may hear in the community. Is software patentable? Software applications have notoriously faced challenges at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office due to Alice 101 rejections. McCoy Russell has developed and utilizes a highly successful approach which integrates searching, drafting and prosecution to be successful in overcoming Alice rejections.
John’s strategies incorporate a portfolio based perspective that has helped start-up companies’ leverage their intellectual property to gain funding.
McCoy Russell will be presenting “Funding in Connection with Women Inventorship” with PDXWIT and Thinkshout, register here. Attorneys Anna McCoy and Janina Malone will explore a multi-tiered approach to support organizations in enhancing women participation at all levels, including in brainstorming, invention submission, and beyond. As one of the few women-owned and managed patent firms handing a significant volume of patent matters, including the being the large patent firm in Oregon in terms of the number of issued utility and design patents, McCoy Russell brings a unique perspective to the issues.
The ability to protect innovation through patents is a key driver to obtaining funding, and statistics show that a significant gender gap still exists in both funding and inventorship even as women in technology or scientific fields continues to grow. While funding opportunities remain scarce (45% less funding per Boston Consulting Group), investors supporting women entrepreneurs have found a higher average ROI (10% higher).
We welcome you to join us on April 7th at 5 PM PT as we discuss an approach that incorporates company support, women actions, and investor awareness. They will address issues women face while seeking funding, how diversity in leadership teams lead to higher revenue for innovation, and strategies companies can implement to foster innovation.
